I’ve never seen a podcaster use an over-ear mic like this new Point Source Audio Embrace product. So my first thought when I opened the box was: will image-conscious content creators be convinced of the merits of an over-ear mic? Good question, Chris. The more cynical side of me answered: “they’ll use whatever their idols use”.
But what would I know? If you told me that people would be happy to attach an inch-wide shiny black square on their lapel for audio (yes, I’m referring to Rode’s Wireless Go) I would have been very sceptical. But Rode’s shiny black transmitters are everywhere.
Which is a neat segue back to the Point Source Audio Embrace mic because it’s designed as an upgrade to the Go. The minijack connector of Embrace will happily plug into the input of any recorder but its sweetspot is plugging into the transmitter of a 2.4GHz DSLR camera-top wireless setup.
This is a pretty specific use-case. So the Embrace proposition is simple: you’ll sound better if you do.
Okay, challenge accepted. I recorded my voice with Embrace (plugged into a Wireless Go II transmitter) and with a Wireless Go II transmitter placed in its usual location, somewhere at sternum height.
You can listen to the recording – no EQ – and make up your own mind.
COMPARISON TEST
Anyone with any audio knowledge won’t be surprised by the fact Embrace sounds comparatively fuller. This is largely a function of the proximity of the capsule to the source. There’s nothing wrong with the Go audio. It’s great – it sounds produced and ready to go. Meanwhile, the fuller sound of Embrace is also ready for primetime, and responds well to additional compression and EQ for a super-present broadcast sound.

STRAIGHT TO THE POINT
Point Source Audio (PSA) headset mics are very well regarded. You can find Point Source Audio’s headset boom mics on Broadway productions and in churches and other AV productions across the world. They’re well designed and durable.
The over-ear short boom is a PSA innovation (it has a patent on the Embrace design). It weighs almost nothing and yet feels utterly secure on your head. You could be an aerobics podcaster and be absolutely safe in the knowledge that Embrace won’t be going anywhere.
The Embrace kit comes with an alternate left hand assembly, a foam capsule shield, a collar clip for the lead, and a soft, drawstring gig bag.
EMBRACE CHANGE
The Embrace proposition is simple: if you care about doing everything you can to capture/stream amazing dialogue then look no further. Embrace will get you a better sound than a camera-top directional mic or a lav (or 2.4GHz transmitter) on your lapel and offers the freedom of movement you won’t get with a professional shotgun mic (unless you can afford a boom operator!).
The aesthetic won’t suit makeup influencers but for anyone who’s conducting demonstrations or where background noise is a factor, Embrace is worth embracing.
